The final volume appeared in 1994, but editions have since been updated. It is widely regarded as an authoritative academic source for ethnomusicology.〔J.E. Druesedow ''Reference sources'' 2000 - JSTOR "... Sachs, Frances Densmore, and many others, but nearly the whole century passed before such a comprehensive series as The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music"〕 It is published by Routledge which, like Garland Science, is now part of Taylor & Francis Group.
